USA's World Cup qualifying failure begs for big US Soccer changes

Let’s be perfectly clear: The most embarrassing failure in U.S. Soccer history was consummated on Tuesday night in a near-empty stadium in the Caribbean tropics, culminating in a soul-crushing 2-1 defeat to a last-place opponent in which the U.S. men’s national team had only needed a win or a tie to qualify for World Cup 2018.

⚽ I was totally shocked when I got back from my run last night and saw the 1-2 result. Gulati absolutely must go- his coaching hires failed to produce an acceptable outcome.

Books from 1923 to 1941 Now Liberated! - Internet Archive Blogs

(blog.archive.org)

The Internet Archive is now leveraging a little known, and perhaps never used, provision of US copyright law, Section 108h, which allows libraries to scan and make available materials published 1923 to 1941 if they are not being actively sold.

📚 Really looking forward to seeing what kinds of forgotten works get unearthed by this initiative.

That Time I Was on Halt and Catch Fire

(kottke.org)

You’re probably wondering how I ended up back in the 1970s with such a sweet jacket and bitchin’ mustache— Ok all jokey tropes aside, I got to appear on AMC’s Halt and Catch Fire last night as a background extra.

Neat story about how Jason Kottke got to take part in one of his favorite television shows.

Garth Brooks sells out seven upcoming shows at Spokane Arena

In the hour after tickets went on sale for Garth Brooks’ previously announced Nov. 11 show at the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena, six more shows were announced. Just three hours after those tickets went on sale, all seven shows – Nov. 9, Nov. 10, two shows each on Nov. 11 and 12, and Nov. 14 – sold out.

🎶 This translates to 84,000 people which kind of boggles my mind for Spokane, but I bet at least half of them are from Eastern Washington and North Idaho.

Adam Morrison new analyst for Gonzaga basketball radio network

Morrison joins Tom Hudson courtside for all home and away games on the network. Hudson is entering his 16th season behind the microphone as the voice of the Bulldogs.

🏀 I really liked Matt Santangelo in that role, but I think Morrison could be pretty insightful and entertaining. Can't believe Hudson's on his 16th season now- time flies!

Announcing the Twine Cookbook - IFTF Blog

(blog.iftechfoundation.org)

Inspired by Inform’s own Recipe Book, the Twine Cookbook is the first step toward building the same type of resource that shows and describes techniques of combining macros and functionality for common tasks.

There's good info now, but I see this really taking off now that it's been officially announced.

Rick Pitino, Tom Jurich Put on Unpaid Leave by Louisville Amid FBI Investigation

(bleacherreport.com)

Louisville interim president Greg Postel announced the decision at a press conference after Steve Pence, Pitino's attorney, told Phillip M. Bailey of the Courier-Journal of the move, noting Pitino is "effectively fired."

🏀 Surprised Louisville didn't just outright fire them.
